Buy Music Day, September 2024

It’s the last Friday of the month, time to buy music.

The weather changed in Brooklyn this past month; long days with low, heavy clouds threatening rain and hoodie weather at night. I’m still wandering the city during the daytime, and trying to make the most of these perfect hiking temperatures.

I listened to a lot of dark industrial, ambient, and downbeat the past few weeks, and I’ve really enjoying zoning out to some hypnotic techno while reading on the subway.

Here are my selections for what to buy on Bandcamp for September 2024.

Featured

Groove Resonance V/A on Techno Wereld Records

New from Techno Wereld Records, the Groove Resonance V/A dives into a 10-track selection of deep techno grooves, spanning a range of styles from jackin’ beats to hard minimal and speedy hardtechno. Fantastic high energy dance music.

Armahanz’s “Slow Down” kicks off with a buzzy, old-school jackin’ rave beat, layered with a soulful vocal sample. Chris Flannigan’s “Vrolijke Lus” rolls in on pulsing kicks swirling with floating rave leads. Kuba Sojka’s “Basic Elements” gets a hard beat rave remix from Edvvin, featuring a rap vocal & punched up percussion. Sánchez Jr. closes the album out with some rumbling, speedy hardtechno.

Lust & Defiance EP by Future City Punks on Ombra International

Authentic new beat and italo disco on “Take My Breath Away” for dancing in the smoke machine. Punchy darkwave and EBM round out this instant classic EP.

Aisthesis by Substak on Apnea

Relaxed, gentle, floating, meandering. Ambient dub techno from Athens via Apnea Label in France.

Shortlisted

Satori by Yin Yang Audio on Ineffable

Another excellent, immersive full-length release from CDMX-based Yin Yang Audio. Opening with ambient industrial soundscapes, then raising the tension on two booming dark industrial tracks. The energy peaks on “You Will Wake Up” unfolding into mechanical darkness, before becoming wound into a series of churning and hypnotic rhythmic noise tracks that descend into a cavernous abyss.

Liminal Dream by Stina Francina on NineTimesNine

The new Liminal Dreams EP by Stina Francia features a solid selection of rolling dark trance tracks. The tracks “Liminal Dream” and “Crystal Corridor” are swirling, cinematic and have fantastic movement. Uptempo and driving, “AH” and “Bby (Your Eyes Met Mine)” feature choppy drums mixed with etherial vocal samples.

Fatal Strategies [Remixed] from New Frames on Green Fetish Records

A follow up to the 2023 debut of New Frames on Green Fetish, the Fatal Strategies Remixed EP is a solid offering of hard techno styles, and features a couple of tracks that are absolute bombs. VILLA’s remix of “oOOoOoOoOOoOoo” is rolling and energetic, prominently featuring a beefy, classic rave synth. EAS has a heavy, driving remix of “Transmigration” with buzzy industrial techno.
